At Kansas City Accident Injury Attorneys, we know its never too early to begin to teach your children about Pedestrian Safety. Unfortunately its impossible to keep your eye on them at all times.

Over the weekend, tragedy struck a local family when a two year-old boy was killed in a hit and run accident, that has parents and police baffled. The fatal child pedestrian accident happened on Blue Parkway near 67th street in Kansas City, Missouri around 2:30 a.m. early Saturday morning. Police are still investigating but believe the child may have wandered out of the nearby Crown Lodge Motel, where the boy’s family was staying for a visit. While details still aren’t clear, Kansas City Police say the boy may have left the motel room after his parents fell asleep and wandered out into traffic.

Our experienced Kansas City Child Accident and Injury Attorneys want you to know your rights if you feel your child is endanger of injury from another adult or even another child while they are at school.

If you are a parent of a young child in Kansas City, you know your biggest fear is wondering how safe your child is while in the protection of teachers and especially other children while they are at school. Most of your fear comes from hoping your kid doesn’t do something to get themselves hurt. Usually the last thing you worry about is their teacher actually covering up a potentially dangerous accident. A family in Paris, Texas is dealing with a most troubling issue that should horrify parents of school aged children.

A 5 year-old girl suffered a severe head laceration in an accident while at school earlier this month in Paris, Texas. Allegedly the girl was kicked into a window by other students in a bullying incident. The girl cut her head on the glass when the window broke. Her mother discovered the injury and confronted the school. Initially the school’s assistant principal acknowledged the incident but said it was merely a case of children horsing around. It was in fact a family member who also has a child at the school who told the mother what really happened.

The five year-old child was allegedly kicked several times and pushed into the window, causing the window to break and cutting the small girl on the head. The school had initally said the girl would not be punished for the incident but still sent home a letter of reprimand. After the mother once again confronted the school, she was told that the incident was caught on video surveillance, but the tape was not saved.

We have a number of informative articles in our expansive library, but Is Your Child the Victim of Abuse? Learn the Warning Signs may be able to help you identify things you never thought you’d have to watch out for. You never want to believe your child is the victim of bullying or abuse while at school but there are warning signs:

Signs of physical abuse

• Unexplained injuries – There should always be a written report for any injury. When a child is hurt in daycare, it is the childcare provider’s responsibility to let the parent know how and when the accident occurred. Frequent accidents may also indicate a problem.

• Injuries coupled with behavioral changes

This is a frightening situation for any parent. Our experienced Kansas City Child Accident and Injury Attorneys want you to know your rights if you feel your child is endanger of injury from another adult or even another child while they are at school. The best way to stay informed is to be active in your child’s life. Ask daily questions about their school activities and listen for warning signs.

If you have a child that has suffered a serious injury while under the care of an educator or day care worker in Kansas or Missouri, you may be entitled to compensation for your expenses including medical bills, legal fees and even any lost wages you suffer because you are forced to miss work. Call our experienced Kansas City Personal Injury Lawyers.
At Kansas City Accident Injury Attorneys, we are always concerned when we hear about an injury accident involving a school bus.

At Kansas City Accident Injury Attorneys, we are always concerned when we hear about an injury accident involving a school bus. With the school year winding down, we’ve had to time take not of the shocking amount of school bus accidents we’ve seen this year– and believe us when we say that we’ve seen more school bus accidents and child injury cases than we should ever want to.

Last week, six children were injured in a school bus accident in New Jersey. According to police, the child injury accident happened at the intersection of Neville Street and Groom Street when the bus struck another vehicle broadside. Reports from eyewitnesses say the collision may have been caused by another motorist running a stop sign. At the time of the school bus crash, there were 41 students on board and 35 were transported to a nearby hospital where six of those children were treated for minor injuries. An adult passenger who was riding on the bus suffered a neck injury in the accident and was also hospitalized.

There has always been a question as to why school buses don’t have seat belts. Is it really more important to save money than protect our children? The shear size of a school bus offers its passengers a great deal of protection when accidents occur. School bus seats are designed to protect children should they be thrown from their seat or even collide with the seat in front of them. Seat belts being added to current school bus design could, in some cases, increase the potential for injury as the seats may not be adequately secured to the floor to withstand an accident. Finally, there are no adequate measures for a bus driver to ensure all of the passengers are safely buckled throughout the driver’s route.

Our experienced Kansas City Child Injury Lawyers want to remind all motorists to practice safe and attentive driving techniques while driving. Even though we are approaching some warm weather, it is still important to drive carefully and be aware of other vehicles on the road with you. Every day in Kansas City there are serious injury accidents caused by distracted and inattentive driving. Let’s all be safe.

If you have a child who has suffered a serious injury in an automobile crash involving a school bus, you may be entitled to compensation for your losses. Call our experienced Kansas City Personal Injury Attorneys. With over 15 years of experience in Auto Injury Accidents including Child Injury cases, we may be able to help you and your family through this difficult and often stressful time.

Riding a bicycle is a keystone of any child’s life and for parent’s it can be one of the most stressful thing about watching your child grow up. Letting them venture out on their own, hoping they know what to do to stay safe and return home with nothing more than typical bumps and bruises. That’s where teaching your child proper pedestrian safety rules comes in. Because no matter if you’re riding a bike or driving a car, you have to stop at stop signs and traffic lights. It is our jobs as parents, make sure your child understands this.

It’s never too early to talk to your child about safety. Teach your child that it is better to wait for an on-coming vehicle to pass and to wait for the next light.

Not all kids know that they are just as responsible to follow the rules of the road as motorists. A 14 year-old girl was hospitalized after she was hit by a car while riding her bicycle. The child pedestrian accident happened in Erie, Michigan. According to police reports the girl was trying to cross an intersection at Peach Street and Liberty Street against a red light around 8 p.m. when she was hit by a truck. The girl was taken to a nearby hospital where she was listed in stable condition.

It’s never too early to talk to your child about pedestrian safety in Kansas City. Teach your child that it is better to wait for an on-coming vehicle to pass and to wait for the next light. You can help your child avoid pedestrian accidents by following these safety tips from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration:

Children under the age of 10 should be supervised when playing or walking near traffic.

Teach children to ask for help before retrieving a toy from the street.

Cross only at a corner or intersection.

Stop at the edge of parked cars, the curb, an ice cream truck or other vehicle.

Cross at a crosswalk, green light or “walk” signal, but don’t assume a green light means the road is safe. Look for on-coming traffic.

Remember, even if you see the driver, the driver may not see you. So, be sure the driver has stopped before you cross the street.

Look LEFT-RIGHT-LEFT for moving cars.

Cross when it is clear, but keep looking left and right.

Walk, don’t run or dart into the street.

Rear lights, exhaust smoke, motor sounds, and turning wheels are signs that a car is about to move. Stay out of the way of these cars.

Always look for cars when crossing a driveway or entrance to a parking lot.

Walk alertly. Don’t wear an MP3 player or other audio device while walking near traffic.

Be seen. Wear bright colors and reflective clothing. Carry a flashlight or reflector at night.

Our Kansas City Child Injury Lawyers want to remind all parents about the importance of stressing bicycle safety on our kids now. As your kids get older they are going to want adventure away from home. Especially during these summer months. Time on the bike is a part of child hood. But we as parents have to make sure they know what is expected of them, as bicyclists on the road.

If you have a child who has suffered a serious injury as a pedestrian or bicyclist in Kansas or Missouri, you may be entitled to compensation for your losses. Call our experienced Kansas City Child Injury Attorneys. With over 15 years of experience in Child Injury Accidents, we might be able to help your family through this difficult time.

Our Kansas City Accident Injury Attorneys work hard to protect victims of drunk driving injury accidents but would much rather see these accidents become a thing of the past. But until that is the case, we are going to continue to bring you examples of tragic crashes, hoping we can get through to all motorists on just how dangerous drinking and driving is.

The real danger in drunk driving accidents, is that innocent victims are often seriously injured and often lost in these senseless accidents. That’s why seat belts are important. While everyone should wear a seat belt while riding in a moving car or truck, it may be what saves your child’s life.

But sometimes you just get lucky. Such is the case with a child who was ejected from a vehicle in a drunk driving accident last week in Conroe, Texas that caused a seven year old child to be ejected from a sports utility vehicle. Reports indicate the child was riding in a SUV with is grandparents when they were hit by an out of control truck pulling a boat on a trailer on the 700 block of Interstate 45 in Conroe. Police say the boy, who was thrown nearly 80 feet in the crash suffered severe injuries that are not expected to be life threatening.

The driver of the truck, 64 year old Melton Lee Brown, was drunk at the time of the crash. He faces two third-degree felony charges of driving while intoxicated. Officials say this is Brown’s third DWI charge. If he is convicted, he faces two to 10 years in prison for each charge.

Recent research from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention suggests that flat screen TV are becoming an increasing danger in American homes, and that accidental injury is the number one cause of death for children under the age of 14.

At Kansas City Accident Injury Attorneys, we know protecting your child from injuries around the home is a very high priority– at least it should be. But, besides the obvious things like locking cabinets, hiding prescription drugs, etc. how safe and secure is your home, really? You may not realized that your flat screen TV may be one of the biggest threats to your child’s safety.

Flat-screen televisions have killed 176 people between the years 2000 and 2010.

Recent research from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention suggests that flat screen TV are becoming an increasing danger in American homes, and that accidental injury is the number one cause of death for children under the age of 14. In fact, the CDC says taht between 2000 and 2010, nearly 200 people died in an accident with a toppled TV and that 96% of those deaths were children under the age of 18. In 2010 alone, hospital emergency rooms saw well over 20,000 emergency room visits concerning injuries caused by toppled televisions. This crazy stat shows a swift rise of 25% since 2006.

The best thing to do is to know every detail about your TV, most importantly, the true weight. Did you know the average 32″ flat screen TV weighs around 50 pounds. Larger TVs obviously can weigh much more. Even televisions with ultra-thin screens (1 1/2 inches) can weigh close to 40 pounds.

There are many things parents in Kansas and Missouri can do to protect their children from injury. Here are a few important safety tips to keep in mind when purchasing, installing and mounting a flat screen TV:

Correctly mounting the flat screen to the wall is the best way to display the television. Putting the television on the wall keeps it out of reach of little hands and minimizes the danger to older children as well.

Never set the flat screen television on top of a dresser or other piece of furniture. Tall furniture poses an obvious risk. But placing the set on a box or another less than sturdy piece of furniture not meant for televisions is a risky proposition.

If you are going to put the flat screen television on a piece of furniture, secure it with a safety strap designed to hold it in place. A safety strap will hold the flat screen and is secured to the furniture and fastened to the wall behind it.

Always supervise small children around flat screen televisions.

As experienced Kansas City Child Injury Attorneys we know that protecting your child is your number one priority and we want to help you keep your child safe from these potentially dangerous and often fatal accidents. There are many ways you can protect your child from being injured by tipping furniture or falling appliances. Be sure to secure loose furniture to walls with tip over straps or restraints and avoid putting heavy objects like televisions on dressers. Kids will be kids. It’s in their genetic make up to have the sudden urge to climb and explore. Please, make sure your home is secure and your child is safe from these risks.

If you or someone you love has suffered a serious injury in an accident in Kansas or Missouri, you may be entitled to compensation for your losses. Call our professional and experienced Kansas City Personal Injury Lawyers. With over 15 years of experience in Child Injury Accidents, we may be able to help you and your family get through this difficult and often stressful time.

This is truly a tragic case, not only because a young life was lost but because accidents like this can be easily prevented. Many country roads across Kansas and Missouri don’t have traffic signs to indicate right-of-way. Furthermore, because of this, many drivers tend to forgo cautiousness. It can be very easy to get caught up driving down a country road when you don’t expect other traffic. Sadly this is when the most tragic of wrecks– or accidents– tend to happen.

Recently, two adults and an infant were killed in a collision with a trash truck that happened in Oxford, KS. around 11:30 a.m. on April 13, 2012. According to authorities from the Sumner County Sheriff’s Department, the collision happened on a road where there are no stop signs or yield signs. The infant, reported to be around 2 months old was killed instantly in the fatal crash. The baby’s parents were hospitalized with critical to life-threatening injuries. The driver of the truck, a 73 year-old man was not hurt in the crash that happened near Wichita, Kansas. The Kansas Highway Patrol is assisting in the investigation.

Did you know that 3 out of 4 parents don’t properly buckle their children when they get in the car? This statistic is provided by the NHTSA. With that in mind, it’s no surprise that auto accidents are the leading cause of death for children ages 3 to 14. But we also know that simply making sure your child is buckled isn’t enough. Law makers across Kansas and Missouri need to re-examine roads in both states and make sure they are equipped with the proper signage to make sure motorists know where and what to look for.

Common Rules at a Stop Sign:

Always come to a COMPLETE STOP and look all ways before proceeding.

At a 3-way or a 4-way stop sign intersection general rule of the right-of-way is the first car to stop is the first car to proceed through

When more than one vehicle stops at about the same time, the rule is that the car on the left should allow the right-of-way to the vehicle to their far right.

It can be easy to ignore a stop sign. Most times you come to one, you may be the only car at the intersection, who why stop– right? Well, if one person is breaking the law, it can lead to a trickle down effect and if one does, why can’t everyone. Stop signs are used to control traffic flow. Pedestrians and bicyclists rely on you as a motorist to be following the rules of the road. They’re always going to assume you’re going to stop. No one can predict your actions as a driver any better than you can predict theirs.

Let’s all do our part to keep the roads in Kansas City safe. When you drive, avoiddistracted driving and use safe and attentive driving techniques.

As experienced Kansas City Child Injury Lawyers we hope all parents in Kansas and Missouri drive smart and buckle up.

If you have a child who has suffered a serious injury in an auto accident in Kansas or Missouri, you may be entitled to compensation for your losses, including medical bills, lost wages and legal fees. Don’t take on the insurance companies alone. Call our experienced Kansas City Personal Injury Attorneys. With over 15 years of experience in Auto Injury Accident and Child Injury Accident cases, we can help your family through this difficult time.

Parents, please remember that it’s never too early to talk to your child about safety. Teach your child that it is better to wait for an on-coming vehicle to pass and to wait for the next light.

Child pedestrian safety is very important to us here at Kansas City Accident Injury Attorneys. Our goal is to help protect you and your family at all times. We want your child to be safe as much as we want motorists to be safe. Learning the proper times and places to cross busy roads is absolutely must-know information for all pedestrians, no matter how old you are.

Last week in Lake County Florida a 14 year-old boy was seriously injured when he was struck by a motorcycle. Reports indicate the boy was trying to cross County Road 561A near U.S. Highway 27 when he was hit by a motorcyclist traveling west on the highway. The boy was rushed to a hospital with severe injuries and was initially admitted to the intensive care unit.

This is a very fortunate case because the child’s life does not appear to be in danger. Pedestrian accidents can be highly unpredictable and the only way to prevent them is for pedestrians and motorists alike to be paying attention at all times.

It does however further illustrate how important it is to be paying attention to the road and who may be on the road with you at all times. This goes for both motorcycle riders and automobile drivers. Because Kansas City motorcycle passengers are more exposed to danger in the event of a motorcycle injury accident, it is important that riders wear the proper safety wear such as helmets and padded clothing.

Parents, please remember that it’s never too early to talk to your child about safety. Teach your child that it is better to wait for an on-coming vehicle to pass and to wait for the next light. You can help your child avoid pedestrian accidents by following these safety tips from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

At Kansas City Accident Injury Attorneys, we want kids to be safe on their way to school but we must make sure they are taking the safest routes possible. If and when their route presents a danger, it is imperitive we help them to understand how to get to their destination in the safest way possible.

Last week in Wisconsin, an 11 year-old boy was killed when he was struck by a train while he was walking to school. Police reports indicate the boy was attempting to cross the track when the trail hit him. The boy was identified as a sixth grader at nearby Longfellow Middle School in Wauwatosa, Wisconsin. The train conducter tried to warn the boy by sounding bells and whistles and even attempted to stop but was unable to avoid the collision.

As Kansas and Missouri Child Injury Attorneys, we know that not all victims survive an accident involving a train and we are deeply saddened by the death of the young boy in this tragic case.

We hope we can help prevent accidents like this in the future. But it’s important for all of us to understand how dangerous it can be walking along a rail road track or attempting to cross a track. Once those lights start blinking and the safety arms go down, STOP. Even if you think you have enough time to snake through the gates before the train gets to you, don’t do it. You’re putting your life and the lives of your friends and family in danger. Be smart.

With over 15 years of experience in Auto Accident and Injury cases, we want to help you and your family through this difficult and often stressful time.

Children are still being injured from the popular Bumbo Seat.

The company recalled the seat in 2007 after several dozen children were reported falling out of the seat in 2007.

The Bumbo Seat is a molded plastic seat which is used to help babies sit up on their own before they’re able to do so. The company has sold nearly 4 million in the United States, but its safety record is uncertain.

This year alone, over 300 injuries have been reported according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission.

After the 2007 recall, the company included warning labels on the product saying it shouldn’t be used on elevated surfaces.

But litigations this year say there have been more injuries to children, when used both on the ground and in elevated surfaces.

Litigations are also accusing Toys R Us retailers of knowingly selling a product that has caused injuries. Under oath, one of the buyers at Toys R Us is quoted as saying that she had never seen an infant product like that without a safety restraint, such as a seat belt, and didn’t think the seat was safe.

Bumbo has released a statement saying that they stand by their product and believe it is safe when used correctly – on the floor – and that children should be closely supervised when they are in the seat.

The company is now working with the Consumer Product Safety Commission to educate parents on the correct use of the seat.

The only Bumbo Seat competitor, bØbØPOD, added a seatbelt after the Bumbo recall.

An attorney in one of the litigations alleges in the Bumbo lawsuit that safer alternative design existed. They are arguing that Bumbo could have made the Bumbo seat wider at the base, raised the side and back of the seat, installed a safety harness or seatbelt, anything to prevent a child from falling out of the seat.
