Children are still being injured from the popular Bumbo Seat.

The company recalled the seat in 2007 after several dozen children were reported falling out of the seat in 2007.

The Bumbo Seat is a molded plastic seat which is used to help babies sit up on their own before they’re able to do so. The company has sold nearly 4 million in the United States, but its safety record is uncertain.

This year alone, over 300 injuries have been reported according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission.

After the 2007 recall, the company included warning labels on the product saying it shouldn’t be used on elevated surfaces.

But litigations this year say there have been more injuries to children, when used both on the ground and in elevated surfaces.

Litigations are also accusing Toys R Us retailers of knowingly selling a product that has caused injuries. Under oath, one of the buyers at Toys R Us is quoted as saying that she had never seen an infant product like that without a safety restraint, such as a seat belt, and didn’t think the seat was safe.

Bumbo has released a statement saying that they stand by their product and believe it is safe when used correctly – on the floor – and that children should be closely supervised when they are in the seat.

The company is now working with the Consumer Product Safety Commission to educate parents on the correct use of the seat.

The only Bumbo Seat competitor, bØbØPOD, added a seatbelt after the Bumbo recall.

An attorney in one of the litigations alleges in the Bumbo lawsuit that safer alternative design existed. They are arguing that Bumbo could have made the Bumbo seat wider at the base, raised the side and back of the seat, installed a safety harness or seatbelt, anything to prevent a child from falling out of the seat.

If your child has been injured while in a Bumbo or another baby product, contact a defective products liability attorney at the Kansas City Accident Injury Attorneys immediately.
Accidents that happen at state and county fair grounds are not uncommon. The rides and attractions at these parks, the same with rides at the big amusement parks should be maintained properly in order to prevent serious injury accidents. But sometimes things happen that to beyond a malfunction and maybe even get out of the control of the ride attendant. Accidents tend to happen when someone is doing something they shouldn’t be doing– even children.

A 4 year-old was seriously injured in an accident at the Louisiana State Fair when he became entrapped in the ride platform after the ride was allegedly re-activated by another child while the ride attendant was helping children exit the ride. Witnesses say the floor of the platform dropped suddenly and the kid slipped into a 6″ gap. Rescue workers managed to free the child before the situation got worse.

Our experienced Kansas City Child Injury Attorneys want your family to be safe on any vacation or weekend adventure and a trip to the amusement park or carnival is certainly worth getting excited about. But make sure your child knows the proper way to behave. It’s no secret that kids can be curious and may want to get involved more than they realize they can. This is why it is important they know their limits are for their own safety. Most parks allow patrons to ride their rides under condition that you are doing so at your own risk– but what happens when the park loses control of protecting its customers?

Head injuries in children happen for a variety of reasons. A few tips to avoid injuries:

Child should always be buckled while riding in a car; either in a car seat or seat belt depending on age.

Children should always wear a helmet when riding a bike.

Please gates on the top and bottom of stairways to prevent falls going up or down.

According to a new study, if your child has been in an accident or taken a fall, they may face a lifetime of problems ranging from communication deficits to trouble with daily self-care.

Children with traumatic brain injury were found to lead to “substantial long-term reduction” in quality of life, according to the study.

The study, published in the November issue of Pediatrics, looked at 729 children under 18 years old treated for brain injuries at emergency rooms in Seattle and Philadelphia between 2007 and 2008.

The children’s functions were determined before the injury, and then they were tested three months, one year and two years after the injury. The children were assessed to see if they could have a conversation, and do things such as use the toilet, brush their teeth, and feed and dress themselves.

85% of the children suffered mild head injuries, and some of them had deficits at three months, but few suffered lasting loss of social and daily life activities. The children that suffered a moderate or severe brain injury seemed to face obstacles in day-to-day life, sports and school activities at the end of the two year research study. Researchers said that the more seriously injured children had a lower quality of life than children undergoing active treatment for cancer.

The study also included a control group of 197 children who had visited the same emergency rooms in the same time frame with only arm injuries. According to the findings, the children in the control group had no significant shortfalls after the two year study was complete.

Farming accidents happen all too often in Kansas and Missouri.

Recently, a 2-year-old Belleville boy died after being run over by a payloader tractor in Scandia near north-central Kansas. The boy was with his father, who was strapping down large hay bales that had been loaded onto a semitrailer. Police reported that the tractor was being backed away from the trailer when the boy ran into its path and was run over. He later died at the hospital.

We’d like to extend our deepest sympathies to the family of the young boy in this tragic farming accident. Farming accidents have become a growing concern for parents across Kansas and Missouri.

Children in rural settings must be watched at all times. Farming machines and equipment are powerful. Children should not be riding on, playing on, or even be around these machines, no matter whether they are in use or not, even with an adult present.

These fatal farming accidents can be prevented by following a few safety tips:

Never ride in the back of a pickup truck or on the fender of a tractor.

Never get on a tractor as an extra rider.

Stay out of the path of moving equipment.

Don’t use electric power tools without adult supervision and always use protective equipment like gloves and goggles.

More and more youth are involved in sports year-round. Dr. Laith Jazrawi, chief of sports medicine with NYU, says that the more you play the more likely you are to be injured. Some parents limit their children to one practice per week and no out of games, while other’s let their children practice several times a week.

However, this shouldn’t keep parents from letting their children play sports altogether. If a child learns proper techniques and conditioning exercises, the stress on their bones can be lessened, which will, in turn, make the likelihood that they will be injured go down.

“I would never stop playing soccer if I got hurt,” says 9-year-old Nina Howland, “I would just keep trying. It’s just so fun. You get so addicted to it, you don’t care if you get hurt.”

Children may not be too worried about injuries, but they may also not realize that an injury could mean a life long struggle with pain. Often, doctors have to drill into the growth plate during a knee surgery. While this isn’t a big deal for adults, who’s growth plate is done growing; this disturbs a child’s growth by disturbing the shape and growth of the bone.

If your child or a love one’s child has a sports related injury, you may have many questions about your rights. The Kansas City Child Injury attorneys may be able to help you. There is no obligation if you call 816-471-5111. You could also go to the “Just Ask” section of our website to submit your questions.

Is your Kansas City child under age 8? If so, did you know they have to be securely strapped into a car seat or booster seat? Missouri and Kansas are two of 29 states that have child restraint laws that cover children up to age 7.

Many older kids may fight and refuse to use their booster seat. But as their parent, you should not give them an option. Make sure they know it’s the law, and they will get in trouble with the police if they are not in their car seat and buckled properly. It’s the truth and they should know it.

There is no rush to get your child out of a car seat or booster seat. Booster seats provide protection to children. They help the seat belt fit correctly, which will help the seat belt work correctly if you are ever in a car accident. The seat belt alone, without a booster seat, can put your child at risk for spinal, hip and pelvis injuries.

The CDC reported that the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia found that using booster seats rather than seat belts alone can reduce the risk of injury to children aged 4-7 by 59%. Unfortunately, a 2009 study by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration found that only 55% of 4-7 year olds were using a booster seat.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) did a study and found that by expanding the child restraint laws to cover 7- and 8-year-olds, crash injuries will be reduced.

Do you think your current booster seat is safe? Or are you in the market for a new booster seat? Before you shop, check out Kansas City Personal Injury Attorney’s list of the worst ranked booster seats.

If your child has suffered a serious injury from a car crash in Kansas or Missouri, you may be entitled to compensation for your losses. Call our experienced Kansas City Personal Injury Attorneys to discuss your situation. We may be able to help you get through this trying and traumatic time.
