Over the weekend, tragedy struck a local family when a two year-old boy was killed in a hit and run accident, that has parents and police baffled. The fatal child pedestrian accident happened on Blue Parkway near 67th street in Kansas City, Missouri around 2:30 a.m. early Saturday morning. Police are still investigating but believe the child may have wandered out of the nearby Crown Lodge Motel, where the boy’s family was staying for a visit. While details still aren’t clear, Kansas City Police say the boy may have left the motel room after his parents fell asleep and wandered out into traffic.

A 5 year-old girl suffered a severe head laceration in an accident while at school earlier this month in Paris, Texas. Allegedly the girl was kicked into a window by other students in a bullying incident. The girl cut her head on the glass when the window broke. Her mother discovered the injury and confronted the school. Initially the school’s assistant principal acknowledged the incident but said it was merely a case of children horsing around. It was in fact a family member who also has a child at the school who told the mother what really happened.

The five year-old child was allegedly kicked several times and pushed into the window, causing the window to break and cutting the small girl on the head. The school had initally said the girl would not be punished for the incident but still sent home a letter of reprimand. After the mother once again confronted the school, she was told that the incident was caught on video surveillance, but the tape was not saved.

Last week, six children were injured in a school bus accident in New Jersey. According to police, the child injury accident happened at the intersection of Neville Street and Groom Street when the bus struck another vehicle broadside. Reports from eyewitnesses say the collision may have been caused by another motorist running a stop sign. At the time of the school bus crash, there were 41 students on board and 35 were transported to a nearby hospital where six of those children were treated for minor injuries. An adult passenger who was riding on the bus suffered a neck injury in the accident and was also hospitalized.

Police say the boy, who was thrown nearly 80 feet in the crash suffered severe injuries that are not expected to be life threatening.

The driver of the truck, 64 year old Melton Lee Brown, was drunk at the time of the crash. He faces two third-degree felony charges of driving while intoxicated. Officials say this is Brown’s third DWI charge. If he is convicted, he faces two to 10 years in prison for each charge.

Flat-screen televisions have killed 176 people between the years 2000 and 2010.

Recent research from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention suggests that flat screen TV are becoming an increasing danger in American homes, and that accidental injury is the number one cause of death for children under the age of 14. In fact, the CDC says taht between 2000 and 2010, nearly 200 people died in an accident with a toppled TV and that 96% of those deaths were children under the age of 18. Recently, two adults and an infant were killed in a collision with a trash truck that happened in Oxford, KS. around 11:30 a.m. on April 13, 2012. According to authorities from the Sumner County Sheriff’s Department, the collision happened on a road where there are no stop signs or yield signs. The infant, reported to be around 2 months old was killed instantly in the fatal crash. The baby’s parents were hospitalized with critical to life-threatening injuries. The driver of the truck, a 73 year-old man was not hurt in the crash that happened near Wichita, Kansas.  The Kansas Highway Patrol is assisting in the investigation.

Last week in Lake County Florida a 14 year-old boy was seriously injured when he was struck by a motorcycle. Reports indicate the boy was trying to cross County Road 561A near U.S. Highway 27 when he was hit by a motorcyclist traveling west on the highway. The boy was rushed to a hospital with severe injuries and was initially admitted to the intensive care unit.

Last week in Wisconsin, an 11 year-old boy was killed when he was struck by a train while he was walking to school. Police reports indicate the boy was attempting to cross the track when the trail hit him. The boy was identified as a sixth grader at nearby Longfellow Middle School in Wauwatosa, Wisconsin. The company recalled the seat in 2007 after several dozen children were reported falling out of the seat in 2007.

The Bumbo Seat is a molded plastic seat which is used to help babies sit up on their own before they’re able to do so.  The company has sold nearly 4 million in the United States, but its safety record is uncertain.

This year alone, over 300 injuries have been reported according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission.

After the 2007 recall,  the company included warning labels on the product saying it shouldn’t be used on elevated surfaces.

But litigations this year say there have been more injuries to children, when used both on the ground and in elevated surfaces.

Litigations are also accusing Toys R Us retailers of knowingly selling a product that has caused injuries. Under oath, one of the buyers at Toys R Us is quoted as saying that she had never seen an infant product like that without a safety restraint, such as a seat belt, and didn’t think the seat was safe.

Bumbo has released a statement saying that they stand by their product and believe it is safe when used correctly – on the floor – and that children should be closely supervised when they are in the seat.

The company is now working with the Consumer Product Safety Commission to educate parents on the correct use of the seat.

The only Bumbo Seat competitor, bØbØPOD, added a seatbelt after the Bumbo recall.

An attorney in one of the litigations alleges in the Bumbo lawsuit that safer alternative design existed. They are arguing that Bumbo could have made the Bumbo seat wider at the base, raised the side and back of the seat, installed a safety harness or seatbelt, anything to prevent a child from falling out of the seat.
